On 30 April, Merlin Unwin Books will publish Undiscovered Corbett, the remarkable new book by local author Ian Douglas.
Undiscovered Corbett sheds new light on the life of the legendary hunter, naturalist and conservationist Jim Corbett. Known worldwide for his gripping accounts of tracking man-eating tigers and leopards in the Kumaon hills during the 1920s and ’30s, Corbett later became instrumental in establishing what is now Jim Corbett National Park – India’s first national park.

Drawing on years of meticulous research, Ian Douglas presents a far more personal portrait of Corbett. Illustrated with previously unseen photographs, original letters and transcripts, the book offers a first-hand account of Jim’s thoughts, his deep love of India, and the rapidly changing world he witnessed. From his childhood in the Himalayan foothills at Naini Tal, to his railway work in Bihar and his dramatic hunts in Kumaon – where entire villages lived in fear – the book explores both the celebrated and lesser-known aspects of his life.
While widely remembered as a fearless hunter and expert marksman, Corbett was also a gifted naturalist who recognised early the need for wildlife sanctuaries to protect India’s forests and big cats. Undiscovered Corbett reveals the complexity of a man whose legacy straddles hunting history and conservation.
Ian Douglas is highly knowledgeable about Corbett’s life and his book will be available from Merlin Unwin Books (30 April) or stocked or order to your local bookshop.
