Fantasy took centre stage as a Newcastle school celebrated this year’s World Book Day on Thursday 5 March.
Staff and students at Sacred Heart Catholic High School embraced the magical worlds of literature, drawing inspiration from books such as The Lord of the Rings, Alice in Wonderland and the Harry Potter series as they dressed up as their favourite characters for the annual celebration.
“The theme was ‘fantasy genre’,” explained Lucy Floyd, English Teacher at the school, which is part of the Bishop Bewick Catholic Education Trust.
“Staff dressed up for the day, and students in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 were invited to wear a book-themed accessory, such as a hat, a wand, a wig, or a cloak. Anything went, as long as it was book-themed!”
Themed activities also took place across the day, including a ‘Drop Everything and Read’ period, and a short story competition which tasked students with writing a 500-word piece of fiction with the title ‘Other Worlds’.
“World Book Day is an opportunity to remind students of the importance of stories, and the joy they can gain from them,” added Mrs Floyd.
