One of Leyland’s busiest junctions is to see three months of temporary traffic lights from Monday.
Lancashire County Council is warning of disruption at the Golden Hill Lane, Leyland Lane and Longmeanygate junction.
Work is needed as part of planning conditions to support a major new housing development at the former Leyland test track site.
Nearly 1,000 homes are due to be built as part of what will be known as Centurion Village.
A spokesperson for the county council said of the need for roadworks: “They will improve traffic flow, reducing delay at the junction by widening the road, removing existing traffic islands, upgrading the traffic signals, and creating an extended right turn lane for vehicles turning into Leyland Lane from Golden Hill.
“There will also be controlled pedestrian crossings on all sides of the junction.”
And the highways department at the county council has fired a warning shot to the contractors undertaking the work saying the temporary lights must be manually controlled from 7am to 7pm.
This follows continued issues with temporary lights on the Grimsargh Bridge widening scheme not being manually controlled as promised.
The county council said: “Our highways team will be making an inspection of the works every couple of days to ensure the conditions of the permit are being met, which includes manually controlling the temporary lights from 7am to 7pm, and removing them as soon as they’re no longer needed. We’ll also monitor quality of the works being delivered, and ensure they’re being managed to minimise the impact on drivers, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as local businesses.”
