Public sector organisations from across the North East are coming together with suppliers this March to tackle one of the biggest sources of organisational carbon emissions — the supply chain.
The North East Public Sector Sustainable & Social Value Supplier Event, taking place on 24 March 2026 at Newcastle Civic Centre, will bring together procurement professionals, sustainability leaders, NHS Trusts, local authorities and suppliers to discuss practical ways to build low-carbon, socially responsible supply chains.
Delivered in partnership with a range of high-profile regional organisations including NEPO, Newcastle City Council, Net Zero North East England, Northumbria University, Health Innovation Network North East and North Cumbria (HINENC), Newcastle Hospitals Charity, and NHS Trusts including Newcastle Hospitals, Northumbria Healthcare and Gateshead, alongside sustainability specialists Genee and SmartCarbon Ltd, the event will draw on a wealth of expertise from across the public and private sectors.
For many public sector and large organisations, the greatest contributor to their carbon footprint is not their buildings, fleet, or energy use, but the goods and services they procure. From medical equipment to outsourced services and everyday consumables, supply chains often represent the largest share of an organisation’s carbon emissions, yet they remain one of the most difficult areas to monitor and manage.
Across the region, public sector organisations are increasingly engaging with suppliers to better understand and reduce the carbon emissions of procurement activities and increase the social value within procurement. Organisations such as Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are now requesting information from suppliers on their environmental credentials and carbon impact as part of procurement processes.
Anna-Lisa Mills, Sustainability Manager at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“This is the sixth annual event and it has proved to be a fantastic resource for both the public sector and suppliers, improving transparency across supply chains and supporting organisations to drive carbon reductions. Working collaboratively with our suppliers is essential if we are to achieve our net zero ambitions while ensuring opportunities remain accessible to SMEs.”
The event will feature a dedicated Low Carbon Innovation Exhibition Zone, offering suppliers the opportunity to showcase sustainable products and services to public sector buyers, as well as opportunities to book one-to-one appointments with procurement and carbon experts to support organisations at every stage of their sustainability journey.
Sponsorship and exhibition opportunities are available for organisations looking to demonstrate leadership in sustainability and social value while engaging directly with public sector stakeholders.
The event is free to attend and open to both public sector organisations and suppliers.
