Places Leisure is encouraging its leisure centres and customers across Northumberland to get active this week in support of BBC Radio 1 presenter Greg James and his Comic Relief challenge, Radio 1’s Longest Ride.
Greg is currently taking on a remarkable 1,000km tandem bike journey from Weymouth to Edinburgh as part of the fundraising effort.
As he makes his way north and passes through the region on Thursday, Places Leisure has launched its own challenge for the week – Match Greg’s milage – calling on its ten Northumberland sites and members to track and measure how many times they can collectively cover the distance from Weymouth to Edinburgh in one week.
Members and non-members alike are invited to pop into their local centre and contribute their kilometres by cycling, walking, running, rowing or using cardio equipment such as the ski erg. Every kilometre contributes to the centre’s total distance as they join Places Leisure sites nationwide in attempting to collectively match – or even exceed – Greg’s 1,000km route.
This challenge is open to absolutely everyone, regardless of fitness level. Whether it’s 1km or 100km, all movement contributes to a shared local goal while helping raise awareness and support for Comic Relief.

Paul Metcalfe, Contract Manager for Places Leisure said:
“Greg’s challenge is truly inspiring, and we want to do everything we can to shine a light on it and the amazing work Comic Relief supports. It’s a great opportunity for Communities to come together, get active and help push him over the line.
“At Places Leisure we believe fitness is for everyone, and that principle sits at the heart of what we do. Our challenge can be completed across a range of activities and equipment – cycling, running, rowing ski-erg and more – so as many as possible can take part.
“There’s a brilliant sense of healthy competition across our Northumberland centres, but more than anything it’s about bringing people together behind a shared goal. We’re proud to support Comic Relief and are calling on our Customers to help Northumberland go the distance.”
The challenge runs until 20 March, and all Places Leisure centres are encouraging Customers to visit, get active and help them climb the Places Leisure leaderboard.
