One of the UK’s most incredible surfing destinations is actually on the outskirts of Bristol – with perfect waves all year round

Bristol may only be about 10 miles from the seaside, but if you’re looking to surf this summer, you’re going to have to travel a lot further than Clevedon, Portishead, and Weston-Super-Mare. These seaside towns can’t offer the gnarly waves of Cornwall or Devon, but there is actually somewhere near Bristol that can, The Wave.

Inspired by surfing trips with his dad, founder Nick Hounsfield had long dreamt of building a top surfing destination that’s accessible for all. The Wave—the first inland  surf spot of its kind—boasts surfing sessions and lessons for all levels (from beginners to experts), with waves that can rival anywhere in the country.

How does The Wave work?

Utilising groundbreaking Wavegarden Cove technology, The Wave says goodbye to hanging around in the ocean, waiting patiently for the perfect wave. The technology can generate up to 1,000 waves per hour, from 50cm to almost 2m, which is a new wave every 8 to 10 seconds. So if you crash out, just jump back on your board!

Other benefits of a 180m long surfing lake at The Wave include crystal-clean water, a lack of crowds, a variety of waves, and guaranteed long rides. Plus, it doesn’t matter how good you are, you will find the right support for you—with everything from lessons for kids (4+) to expert and women-only sessions.

Your standard beginner lesson, however, is open to everyone aged 6+ and features a 30-minute dry land lesson and 1 hour of water training. Think you’re ready to go? Hop into a 1-hour Improver Surf session with 1.5ft waves. But to really know which session is right for you, it’s best to consult The Wave’s website.

What else is there to do at The Wave?

Surfing is hungry work. Thankfully, The Wave also has its very own café—where you can refuel—or relax, with a cold drink on the rooftop terrace. Fancy staying longer? The Camp at The Wave allows you to enjoy a longer surfing break in the countryside in glamping-style tents.
