The African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) will hold its Special NEC in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg, on Saturday, to discuss the leadership vacuum, following the removal its president Sisisi Tolashe.

Earlier this week, the African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) instructed Tolashe to step down as the league’s president.

This came in the wake of President Cyril Ramaphosa instructing her to resign as a Member of Parliament following a scandal involving donated luxury vehicles.

The ANCWL is convening its Special NEC meeting to formally endorse the ANC’s decision to remove Tolashe and decide on interim leadership to take over the league.

She also faces a referral to the ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee.

Meanwhile opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA are pushing for ongoing criminal and Public Protector cases to run their full course regardless of her resignation status.

But her removal was met with mixed feeling with some in the ANC Women League saying the sanction was too harsh as compared to when a male comrade is involved while others saying is double standards viewing her as a sacrificial lamb.
