Scotland’s Handmade Heritage Celebrated in 3D2D’s 2026 Summer Fair Programme

As conversations around sustainability, craftsmanship and conscious spending continue to grow globally, 3D2D Events has unveiled its 2026 summer programme.

The season will feature the flagship West End Fair in Edinburgh alongside the expanding Newbattle Abbey Summer Fair in Midlothian, marking 45 years of supporting traditional craftsmanship while contributing to Scotland’s creative economy.

In an era of mass-produced goods and AI-generated art, 3D2D remains a bastion of the human touch.

Co-organiser and 3D2D Events Finance Director, Philippa Wilson-Buys, says:

Since our inception at the Assembly Rooms in 1981, our organisation has grown a database of over 5,000 approved exhibitors; we make sure that every item sold is ethically handmade.”

The 2026 Summer Programme includes:

  • Newbattle Abbey Summer Fair (July 18): This one-day event is hosted at Newbattle Abbey College, Midlothian. Now in its third year, this date has become a cornerstone for the local community.
  • The West End Fair (August 3–30): Located in St John’s kirkyard, Edinburgh. A sanctuary of calm amidst the Fringe Festival, this village under the trees is built to capacity for 2026 following record-breaking years in 2024 and 2025.

3D2D’s impact extends far beyond the transactions that take place at each event. More than 60 makers will attend the day at Newbattle Abbey Summer Fair, while over 120 exhibitors will take part in each week of the West End Fair in August, with participants changing weekly and many travelling from across the UK. Together, these fairs serve as a significant driver of economic activity, supporting independent makers, local tourism, and the wider creative economy.

Co-organiser and 3D2D Events Director, Jennie Loudon, comments:

“We do anything we can to keep traditional skills alive. We also know that, with limited disposable income, people are taking more time over their decisions, and the choice often falls on fewer, more meaningful pieces.”

Despite high inflation, 3D2D reports a shift in consumer behaviour toward fewer, better things.

“Today’s shoppers are more discerning, opting for larger, high-quality investment pieces over disposable items. Jennie continues,

“This ‘buy once, buy well’ mentality aligns with 3D2D’s core ethos of reducing carbon footprints and supporting the circular economy through upcycled and recycled materials.”

Co-organiser and 3D2D Business Director, Tiana Wilson-Buys, adds:

“We are committed to supporting ethical consumption. Decades before ‘buy local’ became a movement, we were already promoting handmade, sustainable craft.”

Uniquely, the team behind 3D2D Events are practising makers themselves. This hands-on experience informs every aspect of the events, from logistical support like porters and storage, to exhibitor-friendly systems designed to reduce stress and maximise success.
