The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West is calling for the disbandment of the Maquassi Hills Local Municipality council.

This follows the municipality’s failure to account before the North West Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA).

The Wolmaransstad-based municipality was condemned by the SCOPA for failing to present any report before the committee on Thursday.

SANCO spokesperson, Mzukisi Jam says they have have raised several concerns over allegations of corruption, mismanagement of public funds, irregular awarding of tenders, maladministration and the alleged looting spree at the municipality.

“We are requesting for an urgent intervention by the ANC leadership in the Province and the Premier. We are calling for immediate disbandment of Maquassi Hills Local Municipality council because they have proven to us that they are useless. They have nullified their own existence themselves. On the same breath, we are calling for immediate suspension of the municipality manager. This is based on the number of allegations which have been raised by communities, which were brought to the very same attention of SCOPA.”

Jam says the municipality is also failing to deliver services.

“Municipality council has failed to ensure that there’s proper service delivery in the area. They have failed to make sure that the people of Maquassi have access to clean drinking water for a longest of time, therefore we cannot as the Civic movement to allow such things to happen as we watch.”
