The Eastern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) MEC, Zolile Williams, says his department will create surface stormwater drains in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro to avoid flooding during heavy rainfall.

Williams visited the Metro following persistent heavy rainfall that battered the area leading to flooding.

During the past floods, old drainage systems were blamed for severe flooding.

Nearly three thousand residents were evacuated and placed in local centres.

“We are going to try and develop temporary storm water channels that will be placed on top of the surface of the road as the engineers told us. We are advising that they must bring gravel and also open up storm water channels so that we cane be able to control the water that majorly affect informal settlements around Nelson Mandela Bay.”
