A commemorative plaque and tree have been unveiled in honour of a long-serving councillor and volunteer who died last year.
Harry Hancock died in October just days after turning 90. He had Broad Oak ward as a Liberal Democrat for more than two decades and was still an elected official at the time of his death.
He was remembered by colleagues as a “true gentleman”, with then mayor Cllr Paul Wharton-Hardman BEM describing him as “unfailingly courteous, good-humoured, and respected by colleagues across the political spectrum”.

Away from politics, Harry gave his time volunteering as Chair of Penwortham In Bloom, a Friend of Marshway Pond, and a devoted member of Kingsfold Methodist Church.
On Saturday, 30 May, members of the Penwortham in Bloom were joined by councillors from Penwortham Town Council to pay tribute and unveil the plaque and tree in his honour. Harry’s wife, Marion, also attended as guest of honour.

On Facebook, the group said: “It is fitting that the tree has been planted at Marshway Pond, a place Harry cared deeply about and worked tirelessly to support. During the ceremony, Harry’s wife, Marion, had the honour of hammering the plaque into place, creating a touching and memorable moment for all those gathered.
“Harry’s passion for Penwortham, his generosity of spirit and his unwavering commitment to making our community a better place will not be forgotten. We hope this tree will stand as a lasting reminder of a man who gave so much to so many.”
