The Presidency has cautioned against the spread of misinformation following recent incidents involving foreign nationals, describing the loss of life as deeply tragic and conveying condolences to affected families and communities.
The government will engage the World Health Organization (WHO) to address what it says are “unfortunate” inaccuracies, particularly concerning the deaths of Ethiopian nationals.
“Most notably, the WHO’s characterisation of the deaths of the Ethiopian nationals is, unfortunately, incorrect. The events that led to the deaths of these Ethiopian nationals fall within the realm of organized crime, as has already been publicly reported, and are being actively investigated by law enforcement agencies,” says the presidency in a statement.
Cases involving Mozambican nationals are likewise under probe by the South African Police Service.
Government has reiterated its stance that only authorised law enforcement officials have the mandate to enforce the law.
