A group of fundraisers have raised almost £8,000 for two local charities after taking on a 128-foot abseil down Peel Tower on Holcombe Hill.

The group, made up largely of first-time abseilers, collectively raised £7,963.15 in support of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity and Preston-based charity Baby Beat.

Danielle McMillan chose to raise money for Baby Beat in memory of her son James, whom she lost during her second trimester of pregnancy.

Fellow participant Wayne Jameson also took part in memory of his late son, Hughie Jameson.

He said: “As ever, it’s about legacy. Hughie makes the world a better place, and we help him do this by doing stuff like this in his name.”

Among those taking part was Jen Hayward, from Clayton-le-Woods, who received care and support at Royal Preston Hospital.

Jen spent Christmas in hospital after developing a life-threatening infection following emergency surgery to remove her appendix. After recovering, she was determined to give something back to the charity that had supported her.

She said: “I am so pleased to be able to contribute. I had an amazing day and feel super proud of myself.”
