The Home Affairs Department has confirmed that more than 900 undocumented Malawians found to be living in the country illegally were deported from the country on Thursday night.

This follows the repatriation of over 100 Malawians and Mozambicans earlier this week from the Western Cape.

Their repatriation came amid fears of violence, following protests against illegal immigration across the country.

Home Affairs spokesperson Thulani Mavuso says Thursday’s group was the largest of undocumented Malawians deported so far.

“As part of our law enforcement operations through our inspectorate to look for people who are in the country illegally and process them through our deportation process.”

Mavuso says, “Like last night, we deported the biggest number of people from Malawi. They were about 980 that we had to deport last night. It was the biggest contingent. So as we speak, we can confirm that we have deported 980 Malawians and we’ll continue to do so throughout the country.”
