Colleagues at Stagecoach North East’s Walkergate depot in Newcastle are being recognised during Volunteers’ Week for the valuable contribution they make to communities across Tyneside and beyond in their spare time.
Based at the company’s depot on Shields Road, Relief Leading Driver Bradley Jordan and AVL Co-ordinator Ian Mills balance their roles at Stagecoach with volunteering commitments, dedicating their time and skills to supporting local people and community initiatives across the region.
Bradley, who joined Stagecoach in 2022 before moving into the control room team in 2023, volunteers as a Special Constable with Northumbria Police.
As part of his role, Bradley supports frontline policing operations, responding to emergency incidents, assisting the public and helping at major events and planned operations across the force area.
Bradley said:
“I joined Northumbria Police as a Special Constable in 2019 and since then I’ve worked across the force area, gaining many unique skills and experiences. My main role is as a frontline response officer where I respond to 999 calls and assist the public in the best way possible.
“I first developed an interest in policing through the police cadets and, as soon as I turned 18, I joined the Specials and haven’t looked back since. It gives me valuable experience and skills which complement my role within Stagecoach and supports my professional development across both roles.”
Ian, who has worked for Stagecoach since 1999, volunteers with the British Busen Judo Association, where he is currently a 4th Dan black belt and Vice Chairman.
Alongside coaching children and adults, Ian helps organise events across the UK and supports the development of grassroots judo clubs, encouraging discipline, dedication and respect among young people.
Ian said:
“I started volunteering with the judo club shortly after my son joined in 2009 and it has become a huge part of my life ever since.
“It gives me great pride to see children I’ve known from a young age grow into young adults while continuing to attend classes. Through volunteering, we help keep children and adults active, engaged and part of a positive community environment.”
Carl Trodden, Operations Manager at Walkergate Depot, said:
“Both of these guys are respected members of the Walkergate control team.
“They are both conscientious and self-motivated colleagues, who help achieve the best results for customers and the driving team. It is fantastic to see them giving up their own time to support their communities and helping others through volunteering.”
Steve Walker, Managing Director at Stagecoach North East, added:
“We’re proud to serve at the heartbeat of daily life in Newcastle.
“Away from the buses, it is brilliant to learn that Ian and Bradley dedicate so much time and commitment to their communities. We would encourage other colleagues to follow suit and enjoy the rewarding side of volunteering and giving something back.”
