The trial of three people accused of stealing approximately 580 000 US dollars from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm is expected to resume at the Modimolle Regional Court in Limpopo on Wednesday morning.

The matter was postponed last week to allow the defence to retrieve the cellphone of accused number one, Imanuwela David, which had been seized by the investigating officer and needed to be collected from Pretoria.

David, along with siblings Froliana and Ndilinasho Joseph, is on trial for allegedly stealing money that was hidden in a sofa at the farm in February 2020.

The defence told the court that David’s cellphone’s iCloud storage is full and that an expert is needed to access the device without deleting information that could be used as evidence.

The defence wants to use data from the phone to show that David was able to purchase a house in Johannesburg using money from a divorce settlement received while he was working as a security guard in 2016.

The state is expected to begin cross-examining David. His co-accused, Froliana and Ndilinasho Joseph, are also expected to testify.
