Four farms across Preston, the Fylde and north Lancashire are set to open their gates as part of Open Farm Sunday (OFS).

Open Farm Sunday, which is run by Linking Environment and Farming and celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is one of the farming industry’s leading public engagement programmes and offers a unique opportunity for visitors to meet farmers face-to-face and get up close to machinery, livestock and crops.

This Sunday, 7 June, will see Myerscough College open Lodge Farm at Bilsborrow, just north of Preston, where there will be animal displays, machinery, external trade stands, children’s activities, food and careers advice for those interested in land-based opportunities. There will be a small charge of £5 to park.

On the same day, Fernhill Farm, Preesall, Poulton-le-Fylde, will be open from 11am to 4pm as farmer Lucy Raby continues to showcase the work she is doing to educate the public about dairy farming. With a popular milk vending machine on-site, the farm hosts school visits throughout the year. This is free to attend.

Also opening its doors this Sunday will be Hare Apple Tree Farm, just south of Quernmore in the Forest of Bowland, which will give visitors an insight into dairy, beef and sheep farming and is also free to attend.

Next Sunday, 14 June, will see Park Farm at Nateby, Garstang, welcome visitors from 11am to 4pm. With a large social media following for its Mookshake Shack, which offers milkshakes, milk and ice cream, this event will also be free to attend.

Annabel Shackleton, Open Farm Sunday event manager, said:“Open Farm Sunday is an opportunity to see sustainable farming in action, not as an idea on a label, but as something real, practical and happening every day.”
