A major milestone has been reached in the transformation of the former Aberthaw Power Station site, with the safe and successful demolition of its iconic chimney stack.
Standing at approximately 650 feet (198 metres) tall, the Aberthaw stack was one of the tallest structures in Wales and had dominated the South Wales skyline for more than 50 years.
Constructed as part of the power station’s development during the late 1960s and early 1970s, the chimney housed three flues and became synonymous with Aberthaw’s role in electricity generation and industrial development across Wales.
Visible from communities throughout South Wales and across the Bristol Channel, the towering structure served as a landmark for generations and remained a lasting symbol of the site’s contribution to the Welsh energy sector. Its demolition marks a significant step in the site’s transition from its industrial past towards a future focused on sustainable energy, innovation-led industry and long-term regeneration.
The controlled demolition was carried out by CCR Energy Ltd’s demolition contractor, Erith Contractors Ltd, with support from specialist team PDC Explosives Engineering. The operation formed part of the wider demolition and site-enabling programme currently taking place at Aberthaw and was delivered under strict safety and environmental controls.
Removing the chimney will help unlock the next phase of redevelopment, with the site being prepared to support future opportunities linked to clean energy, advanced manufacturing, industrial innovation and environmental resilience.
The redevelopment programme is being delivered through a phased approach designed to provide flexibility for future investment opportunities, changing market demand and emerging technologies.
