Eastern Cape police say they have arrested two men after the discovery of two bodies being illegally transported in a panel van at Nqanqathu.

Police spokesperson Nobuntu Gantana says police received information about a vehicle transporting bodies.

The vehicle travelling towards Kwa Bhaca was found parked outside a supermarket.

Gantana says police found two bodies wrapped in white bags and the driver told police that they were delivering bodies from Cape Town funeral parlours to Kwa Bhaca.

She says a third body collected at a Gqeberha funeral parlour had already been dropped off, when the police stopped the vehicle.

Gantana elaborates, “An environmental health practitioner attended and issued a fine of R1000 each for not being in possession of a certificate of competence; a contravention of the National Health Act and Regulation R363. No formal criminal charges have been laid at this stage.”

“The two recovered bodies were taken to a local mortuary in Nqanqarhu for safekeeping. Relatives have been summoned to identify the bodies. The two suspects remain in police custody,” explains Gantana.
