Edinburgh’s Dynamic Earth Transforms into Festival Fringe Venue

Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh’s world-class Science Centre and Planetarium, has unveiled its full programme for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at Venue 315.

This August, the educational charity will bring together scientific discovery and the creative arts, transforming its landmark building and 360° digital dome into a vibrant space for inspiration, music and performance.

Edinburgh’s only Planetarium will host immersive 360° cinematic experiences, offering a series of screenings and live events. Back by popular demand, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon returns to the dome, pairing the legendary 1973 album in surround sound with breathtaking, visuals of the cosmos. Classical music enthusiasts can also experience The Planets 360, a modern reimagining of Gustav Holst’s iconic orchestral suite that fuses astronomy with cutting-edge digital art.

Beyond music, the programme proudly celebrates Scotland’s scientific heritage with Whisky Under the Stars . Supported by The James Hutton Institute and led by Dynamic Earth’s resident astronomers, this evening event pairs a guided tour of the night sky with a tasting of premium single malts. This year’s run honours a major milestone: the 300th anniversary of Edinburgh’s own James Hutton, the “Father of Modern Geology.” Guests will toast to Hutton’s revolutionary concept of “deep time,” which reshaped our understanding of the Earth’s age, before journeying through the venue’s atmospheric indoor tropical rainforest.

Dynamic Earth’s spectacular architectural spaces will also come alive with live contemporary performances. In the dramatic, glass-walled Stratosphere, Scotland’s premier contemporary choir, Pitchcraft, will bring their signature high-energy vocal harmonies and theatrical flair to the festival. Meanwhile, the intimate Salisbury Suite will host HumAnimalia, an evocative independent theatre production exploring the complex relationships between humans and the natural world, alongside The Science Storyteller, an interactive children’s show designed to spark curiosity in young minds.

Completing the lineup are popular Sign-Alongs, which transform the Planetarium into a joyful community space for families and musical theatre fans alike. For little ones and their adults, catch the vibrant Disney film Encanto. And for those over eighteen enjoy The Greatest Showman, accompanied by a drink from the bar.

Elsewhere, in the Ozone space, take in Echoes of Lingnan, a unique exhibition focussing on cultural sustainability and modern design. Theatre company Noven Ensemble will also be bringing their show Pews at Ten to the Ozone for an afternoon of character comedy.

Located at the foot of iconic Arthur’s Seat, Dynamic Earth offers visitors a full day out, combining immersive galleries, live science engagement and one of the UK’s most striking Planetariums.

Suzie Holligan, Visitor Experience & Events Director at Dynamic Earth, commented:

“At Dynamic Earth, our mission is to inspire wonder and a lifelong curiosity about our planet and the wider universe. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is a magnificent celebration of human creativity, and we believe that science and the arts are naturally kindred spirits. By opening our Planetarium and building to these incredible performers and experiences, we hope to give visitors a profound, beautiful, and uplifting experience that stays with them long after they leave our venue.”

The Dynamic Earth Fringe programme runs throughout August. Full scheduling information and direct booking links for all individual shows can be found on the official Dynamic Earth website at: https://dynamicearth.org.uk/whats-on/edinburgh-fringe/
