M61 shut down due to ongoing police-led incident

The M61 was closed in both directions while police lead on tackling an incident.

The motorway was closed between junction 8 for Chorley and junction 6 for Horwich in both directions on Sunday morning (12 October). The incident was first reported at around 8.30am.

The nature of the incident is not yet clear, although National Highways said it is a ‘police-led incident’ and Traffic England reports that there are pedestrians on the carriageway.

A spokesperson for National Highways: North West said: “The M61 in Lancashire is closed in both directions between J8 (Chorley) and J6 (Horwich), due to a police-led incident.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are in attendance assisting with closures on the approach.”

The road was reopened shortly before 10am.
