The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for failing to consult members of the GNU in the appointment of Ayanda Dlodlo as South Africa’s ambassador to France.
Dlodlo is replacing Nathi Mthethwa, who died in Paris last year in what has been described as an apparent suicide.
The Democratic Alliance has reportedly condemned the appointment of Dlodlo who has allegedly been implicated in the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture in 2021.
FF Plus leader Dr Corné Mulder says, “It’s correct that the President does have the authority to do the appointment of ambassadors. That’s what the Constitution cues him in terms of Section 84-2-I. But it’s also true that we no longer have a situation where there’s only one party governing, we have a government of national unity.”
“And although it’s the authority for the President to do the appointment, I would think that at least the President should consult the leaders of the parties that are members of the GNU before making an appointment to such an important position, remembering that France is part of the G7,” adds Mulder.
