Metrocentre Community Hub Offers Free Wellbeing Support for Young People

Young people in Gateshead can now access wellbeing support on the same day they ask for it, simply by visiting their local shopping centre.

A new walk-in wellbeing service has opened inside the Metrocentre Community Hub, offering free drop-in sessions for 11 to 18-year-olds, with no appointments or referrals needed.

Run by children’s charity, The Children’s Society as part of its Time for young people initiative, young people can get one to one sessions with experienced practitioners, join group activities or just use it as a quiet place to unwind.

The charity chose the Metrocentre Community Hub because it is familiar to young people and easy to reach by public transport.

Mark Russell, CEO at The Children’s Society, said:

“Our mental health system is failing too many children. Long waits and overstretched services mean young people are being left to struggle on their own, often until it’s too late.

“This service offers an improved, modernised approach where children can access immediate help in a way that works for them. Every child deserves to feel seen, heard and supported, – we want to make sure no one falls through the cracks.”

The drop-in service is open to any young person living or studying in Gateshead.  Care leavers and young people with special educational needs or disabilities can use it up to age 25.  Those aged 11 or 12 are welcome to come along with a parent or carer.

Staff will also run drop-in sessions at community groups across Gateshead too, reaching young people who don’t yet feel ready to visit the main hub.

Samantha Logan, Time for young people Gateshead Service Manager, said:

“We are thrilled to launch this service in the Metrocentre to help young people in Gateshead with their emotional needs. Whether it’s managing anxiety, coping with difficult life situations, or simply needing someone to talk to, we’re here to help.

“Young people don’t need an appointment – they can simply pop in and talk to our team. Our practitioners are ready to listen. We know that early help makes a huge difference and can often prevent issues from getting more serious or reaching crisis point and that’s what this hub is all about.”

The hub is open for drop-ins on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 4.30pm and 7pm, and on Thursdays between 1pm and 4pm.
