The African National Congress (ANC) in eThekwini is calling on the municipality to tighten security for councillors and municipal buildings.
The party’s regional task team made the call in the wake of the killing of ANC councillor Sibusiso Khwela.
He was gunned down in Klaarwater, west of Durban while assisting community members.
Khwela, who had served two terms as a councillor, was not expected to stand for re-election.
ANC RTT coordinator Thanduxolo Sabelo says the attack has caused them to worry about the safety of other councillors in the municipality.
He says the murder also highlights the need for a review of security at municipal buildings.
“We have actually requested the eThekwini Municipality to try and look at the issue of security around councillors and around buildings of the municipality. If you understand what happened yesterday, it was a killing that happened in the office, in a Sizakala center, where someone walked in, coming to look for help or posing as someone seeking assistance from the ward councillor. He listened to him and then he pulled out a gun and killed him,” says Sabelo.
