The Inter-Ministerial Committee on migration, says it is targeting telecommunications as a means of dealing with illegal immigration.
Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says government will also use the country’s digital capabilities to ensure that visitors don’t overstay past their visas.
Kubayi was addressing the media in Pretoria, alongside organisers of various anti-illegal immigration protests.
“We’ve started to modernise our port of entry which is the border gates. What we are modernising there is the ability for a person when they arrive in the country to be able to be registered on the electronic system, to say you’re coming here you’ve got a visa and we register your telephone number. 24-hours or 48-hours before your departure date is due, an SMS will be sent to you to say your visa dates are ending, please leave the country- you’re required to leave. How we’re linking that to the issue of communication is the issuing of RICA sim cards.”
