The Jacob Zuma Foundation has called on the Presidency and the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure to ensure that government policies relating to former heads of state are fully implemented for former President Zuma.
The Foundation has raised concerns about security at his residence, alleging that it is not being properly maintained.
Zuma is currently recovering in a Pietermaritzburg hospital.
Foundation spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi says the former president should receive the support provided for under Cabinet policy.
“They must show demonstrable care for his Excellency President Zuma. And the demonstrable care that they should do is something that is contained in the Cabinet policy. And one of that is the maintenance of the residence of the former presidents. They do that for all other presidents, except for President Zuma. I don’t know what it is, vindictiveness against President Zuma. They don’t maintain Nkandla.”
However, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson has rejected claims that the department is failing to maintain the security infrastructure at Nkandla.
Macpherson says the department cannot provide services that fall outside its legislative mandate in relation to the security arrangements of former heads of state.
“We, as the Department of Public Works, maintain the security infrastructure of all former heads of state. That is which they are entitled to, and that is which we do. What Manyi wants is us to go far beyond that. He wants us to maintain the private residence of an individual. That is not permissible under law. The Constitutional Court has already ruled on that. The Public Protector has already ruled on that.”
