Opposition is mounting in the United States Congress against President Donald Trump’s decision to strip South Africa of its preferential trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
Senior Democrats on three powerful congressional committees have criticised the move, warning it could damage American economic interests while handing China a strategic advantage.
Congressman Gregory Meeks and Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrats on their respective foreign relations committees, accuse the administration of prioritising political spectacle over substantive diplomacy.
They are also demanding greater transparency from the White House and urging negotiations with Pretoria before the termination takes effect on 1 January 2027.
Their intervention follows criticism from Congressman Richard Neal, the senior Democrat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, who called the decision grievance-driven and warned of economic instability.
All three are pressing Washington for greater engagement and clarity, with Meeks and Shaheen urging negotiations during the 60-day notification period before South Africa loses its trade preferences.
