Thousands of Telstra customers across Australia were unable to make calls for hours this afternoon due to a nationwide outage.

Australia's largest telco confirmed the outage on its website and on X, formerly known as Twitter, just before 2pm.

"If you're a Telstra customer you might be noticing some issues with mobile calls, we're working on a fix and hope to get everything back up and running soon," Telstra wrote on X.

Complaints of outages from Telstra customers began to surge right after midday, peaking at 1.48pm, according to Downdetector.

The telco said that Triple Zero calls appeared to be unaffected and mobile data was working, meaning customers could make calls using apps such as Messenger, WhatsApp and Facetime.

Telstra declared the issue resolved at 2.30pm (AEDT).

The outage has been blamed on a software change.
