The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced that it will unveil its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
Themed ‘The Role of Early Warnings towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development’, the event will provide critical climate-related forecasts for the year.
According to a statement by NiMet on Monday, the SCP will include detailed predictions on rainfall and temperature patterns, onset and cessation dates of the rainy season, cropping season lengths, and total expected rainfall in all 774 Local Government Areas.
Naija News understands that temperature projections from January to May, as well as vigilance forecasts for diseases like malaria and meningitis, will also be featured.
Speaking on the SCP, NiMet’s Director General and CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike, highlighted its significance, “The Seasonal Climate Prediction highlights vital Weather and Climate information that may affect socio-economic activities in the following sectors during the year: Agriculture, Aviation, Disaster Risk Management, Health, Oil & Gas, Telecommunication, Tourism, Transport (Water and Land), Power (hydro and renewable), Water Resources Management, etc.”
Addressing Sectoral Needs
Prof. Anosike emphasized that the SCP is a critical resource for mitigating climate-related challenges across various sectors.
“The socioeconomic implications of the expected rainfall and temperature patterns for some sectors of the economy are also presented in the publication,” he added.
The SCP is regarded as a national resource, attracting stakeholders from diverse sectors, including public and private organizations, development partners, NGOs, diplomatic representatives, and farmer associations.
The event, which will be officially presented by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, will also feature the launch of a summary document tailored for policymakers, translations of the SCP into three major Nigerian languages, and a report on the State of the Climate in Nigeria.
The SCP is part of NiMet’s annual mandate to provide early warnings and guidance on weather, climate, and water-related issues.
