Economic Hardship: Your Policies Not Properly Thought Through – Catholic Bishops Knock Tinubu

Tinubu Is A Man Of Compassion, Will Ensure Nigerians Don't Suffer – Presidency

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has expressed disappointment with the outcomes of different government policies, stating that they do not appear to have been thoughtfully planned by the President Bola Tinubu led government.

Naija News reports that the clerics urged the government to take prompt action to curb the rising level of insecurity in the nation.

This was announced in a communiqué issued at the end of the conference first plenary meeting, which took place from February 16 to 22, 2024, at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria Resource Centre in Durumi, Abuja.

The communique by CBCN read, “We note the efforts of the Federal Government in addressing some of our key economic problems. While we understand the reasons behind some of the reforms, it is our view that some of these policies seem not to have been properly thought through and as such the outcomes seem to fall short of expectations.”

CBCN claims that in order to prevent anarchy and turmoil from erupting, the government needs to take immediate action to address the growing discontent and restlessness among the populace.

According to the church leaders, the situation has reached a level never witnessed in the nation, and they added that people’s lives are becoming more and more difficult due to the deteriorating economy.

The bishops also maintained that the ability of a government to safeguard people and property is a necessary condition for its legitimacy.

400,000 Policemen Inadequate To Secure Nigeria’s Huge Population – Abbas

House Of Reps Speaker Appoints Prof. Dan-Azumi As Chief Of Staff

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, argues that 400,000 police officers in Nigeria are insufficient to protect the country’s 200 million citizens.

Speaking on Thursday during a courtesy call by the Association of Clerks of State Houses of Assembly, Abbas—who was represented by the House’s Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Okezie Kalu stated that the establishment of state police was essential.

Naija News reports that he said state policing would increase internal security because the operators were already more familiar with the terrain than the police.

The creation of the state police, according to Abbas, is similar to the changes made by the 9th National Assembly to the railway and power industries, among other things, so that the states could utilize certain constitutional rights under the concurrent list.

He said, “On other key nationally important matters like state police, for example, the House recognizes the diverse perspectives and needs across different states.

“We believe that through constructive dialogue and a willingness to find common ground, we can arrive at solutions that truly serves the best interests of all Nigerians.

“Talking about state police, you will remember also that we did something with the Correctional Services. These are issues that ordinarily fall into the exclusive list of the Constitution of the federal of republic of Nigeria which you had no business tampering with.

“But in the spirit of true federalism, the 9th and 10th Assemblies are determined to bring some of these for better governance, to take it from the exclusive list to the concurrent list. We did that with the railway and power in the 9th Assembly. The question is, how many of the states have drafted laws, domesticating that in their state?

“Now, the state police is here. We want to use the legislative intervention to improve the needs in our society. One of our needs is security. And we have tried the one layer police system and they overwhelmed us.

“The truth remains that 400, 000 policemen, policing over 200 million people can never give you the expected security. It is not even in line with the international best practices on police per citizen policing.

“How do we make it trickle down and achieve what we are looking for. Imagine a brother of mine trained in Sokoto or Kaduna during his training as a policeman and he finished and was sent to Bayelsa, a riverine area where the culture is different, language is different, even the way of movement is different -they use mainly boats and this our brother has a phobia for water, how do you expect him to police the people who swim?

“The policing will not be thorough. But take a man from that community who knows the in and out of the geography of the area, train him around that place, send him to police, you will agree with me that he will police better. The same thing if you take my brother from Bayelsa to Sokoto, he will not police better than the Sokoto man.

“Yet, the spirit of one nation, national integration, federal character is key and cannot be tampered with. That is why the federal police can have the coloration of what it is at the moment.

“And another thing is, if we don’t streamline it, you will see pockets of organizations, vigilante groups springing up everyday, getting armed everyday. If tomorrow we are not able to manage them in line with the core principle of policing, we may end up creating monsters that will add to insecurity.”

Labour Party Speaks On Fraud, Forgery Allegations Against Abure

LP Crisis: Abure Used Party's Name To Raise Campaign Funds In US - Suspended Treasurer

The Labour Party (LP) is poised to address the controversy surrounding its National Chairman, Julius Abure, with a comprehensive statement expected from the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) soon.

The Director of Media and Publicity for LP, Yunusa Tanko disclosed this development amidst growing concerns over leadership crises within the party, highlighted by Abure’s recent arrest in Benin City, Edo State.

The arrest, which took place on Wednesday, was prompted by allegations of forgery and illegal possession of firearms against Abure, following a petition by some party members.

The petitioners accused the national chairman of forging the signature of the party’s National Secretary, Kayode Ajulo, to illicitly withdraw N1.3 billion from the LP’s account.

They further alleged that Abure had issued threats against their lives should they contest his actions.

Abure has vehemently denied the accusations, asserting his innocence and claiming to possess documentary evidence supporting his defense.

He also noted that the legal disputes concerning these allegations are currently being adjudicated in court.

According to Tanko, who spoke to ARISE TV on Thursday, the Labour Party’s NWC has already initiated an internal probe into the matter, offering Abure an opportunity to defend himself against the charges.

The investigation is set to include a forensic analysis to ascertain the authenticity of the implicated signature.

Moreover, Tanko highlighted suspicions that the aggrieved members lodging the petition against Abure might be motivated by external influences seeking to destabilize the party and mar its reputation in the lead-up to the upcoming gubernatorial primary election in Edo State.

Should the investigation find Julius Abure guilty of the charges, the NWC has made it clear that he will face expulsion from the party.

He said, “I brought documents on this table to explain whether Abure did forge a signature or not. These cases were already in court and that there would be a forensic investigation to confirm whether there was actually a forgery.

“The internal mechanism is going to be an investigation within the party. And the investigation within the party will give us the opportunity to come out and publicize what we’re doing to confirm whether there was a forgery or not. That also takes us to the issue of the police. This particular case is still in the court.

“We started an investigation immediately after the issues were raised, which was some couple of months ago. But the problem is that before we could deal with one issue, they came up with another issue. So we feel like it’s a choreographed and a calculated attempt to bring disdain and disrespect to the party. And if you notice it, the trend is going gradually.

“However, at every point in time, the national working committee will come out with a statement as regards every allegation that has been made against the chairman.”
