400-Level Abia University Student Dies During Cult Clash

A 400-level History and International Relations student of Abia State University died during a cult clash over the weekend.

Naija News learnt that the Abia State Government confirmed the death on Monday, after the week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by the state governor, Alex Otti.

Briefing journalists,  the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, said the state government has dispatched some security agencies to the institution to restore normalcy.

He further advised students to refrain from violence and face their studies.

He said, “It has come to the notice of the state government about skirmishes in Abia State University, Uturu, between student groups where a student lost his life.

“Some remedial actions have been taken to return normalcy (in the institution). The state government has dispatched some security agencies to Abia State University Uturu.”

According to PUNCH, tensions are high at the school following the renewed outbreak of violence between the two rival cult groups, which left the 400-level student dead.

Eyewitnesses said that members of a rival group attacked the victim within the university area, which led to his death.

While the school authorities are yet to issue a statement on the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Kenechukwu Onwumelie, said the police are aware of the matter and are investigating the incident.

JUST IN: Court Affirms Baruwa NURTW President

Arrested NURTW President, Baruwa Speaks As Police Grants Him Freedom

The National Industrial Court in Abuja has reinstated Tajudeen Baruwa as the re-elected president of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), effectively dissolving the Tajudeen Agbede-led Caretaker Committee.

The decision comes as a resolution to the protracted leadership dispute within the union, with Justice O. O. Oyewumi presiding over the case.

Justice Oyewumi’s verdict confirmed the validity of the delegates’ conference held across the union’s six zonal councils on May 24, 2023, where Baruwa was re-elected for a second term.

The court also validated the Quadrennial National Delegates Conference that took place on August 23, 2023, at Ta’al Hotels in Lafia, Nasarawa State, inaugurating Baruwa and other national officers.

The judgment further restrained Najeem Yasin, the former President and current Board of Trustees chairman, from intervening in the union’s daily operations, clarifying that Yasin’s role should be limited to acting as the board’s chairman.

In a critical aspect of the ruling, Justice Oyewumi declared the national delegates’ conference held on October 25, 2023, which purportedly saw Isa Ore and his National Administrative Council take office, to be illegal, null, and unconstitutional.

The judge noted the lack of evidence pointing to a crisis within the union that would justify the ‘doctrine of necessity’ invoked for establishing the caretaker committee.

She ruled, “The National Delegates conference held on October 25, 2024, cannot stand and therefore declare null and void.

“Alhaji Najeem Usman Yasin is also restrained from interfering in the day-to-day running of the affairs of the union. Though he can act as Chairman of the board of trustees of the union.”

Shaibu Shuns Impeachment Notice, Edo Assembly To Use Substituted Service

Breaking: Edo State House Of Assembly Set To Impeach Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu

The Edo state House of Assembly has disclosed that it will resort to substitute service to serve the impeachment notice to Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

Naija News reports that the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, announced this during plenary on Monday.

Recall that the House of Assembly commenced proceedings last week to impeach the embattled Deputy Governor.

Announcing the commencement of the impeachment proceedings after sitting last Wednesday, the majority leader of the state house of assembly and member representing Ovia North East 1, Charity Aiguobarueghian, stated that the petition against the deputy governor dated March 5, 2024, was endorsed by 21 out of the 24 lawmakers.

The majority leader maintained that the number of lawmakers that signed the petition has met the required two–thirds as stipulated in the constitution.

He noted that the petition was based on allegations of perjury and divulging Edo State government secrets.

However, during the plenary on Monday, the Speaker said Shaibu had refused to acknowledge the impeachment notice sent to him from the court through the DHL courier service.

Agbebaku said the impeachment notice to the deputy governor will now be served through a publication in the national dailies.
