At Costco, shoppers are still refusing to buy one of the warehouse chain’s main poultry items.
In 2024, Costco started selling its ready-cooked chicken in plastic bags instead of plastic containers.
The price has stayed steady at $4.99, but shoppers are still confused by the packaging switch.
On the social media platform Reddit, many took issue with the change, aesthetically and practically.
One person wrote: “So many ways to improve this packaging and yet they don’t.
“So hard to cut them apart and they always leak when defrosting in the fridge.”
A second chimed in: “The packages of chicken parts are frustrating because they tend to be hard to separate without having leaks.”
And a third agreed: “The seam between portions are razor thin and the plastic bubble itself is very thin and prone to leaks from basic handling.”
FOOD COURT FUMBLE
Shoppers have taken issue with favorite items being removed from Costco, something that happens in the food court many times a year.
Recently, shoppers reignited their anger over the loss of the churro, which doesn’t appear to be coming back anytime soon.
The treat only set fans back $1, but was replaced with a chocolate chip cookie, according to reports.
It is still not known why the churro was discontinued, but it is still carries fond memories for many shoppers on social media.
Some speculated that the churro was cut because of low sales, but this was never confirmed.
One shopper wrote online: “”Everything I love gets taken away from me. I’m just not interested in the giant warm cookie.”
A Little History
Here's what Aurielle Weiss, Assistant Consumer Editor with The U.S. Sun, has to say…
Costco has been selling rotisserie chickens since around 2000.
Starting in 2009, the warehouse retailer started selling them for $4.99, despite rising inflation.
In fact, Costco cut its costs by opening a poultry processing plant in Nebraska in 2019 to raise its chickens.
According to experts David and Susan Schwartz, the company only allows the chickens to sit on display for two hours.
After two hours, employees remove the chickens from shelves and use them in other dishes like soups and salads.
The experts also claim to grab the chickens once you hear the ring of a bell.
The bell lets employees know that a fresh batch of chickens is ready to be sold.
While the $5 item remains a staple for many, the company’s decision to change its packaging bothered some members.
The chickens used to come in a clear plastic encasing with a black plastic bottom.
They now come in bags with a zipper and contain 75% less plastic.
And another cried: “I have fond memories of going shopping with my mom as a kid.
“I was always SO stoked when she would give in and get us a churro to share.”
SOME GOOD NEWS
But with food court changes comes instances in which fans are satisfied with what is introduced.
Last month, shoppers were delighted at the news that the Combo Calzone would be coming to food courts.
The snack costs $6.99 and contains everything that you’d hope for, with pepperoni, sausage, cheese, tomato sauce, onions, peppers, olives, and mushrooms.
This time, members reacted well to food court news.
A shopper commented online: “This looks delicious!! I know what’s for dinner tonight.”
And another beamed: “My stomach is bubbling!!”
