Nigeria calls for 15% of GDP to be allocated to health in Africa

Nigeria’s Health Ministry says 15% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) should be allocated to the health sector in the low and middle-income countries, especially in Africa.

The ministry’s Director- General of the National Agency for the Control of Aids Dr Ilori Temitope says Nigeria is facing health challenges such as malaria, TB and HIV.

Representing Nigeria’s Health Ministry at the G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting under way in Polokwane, Limpopo, Temitope says, “I believe all African countries should prioritise health, they should be increase in podiatric allocation to health in accordance with the Abuja declaration, at least 15% of the GDP should be allocated to health.”

She says, “I believe they should be a public private partnership across the globe, but I also believe that as a G20 supporter with funds they should do so in alignment with the national priorities, to ensure national growth national ownership and national sustainability.”
