Motorists dismayed yet again over delays caused by temporary lights on A6 at Barton

Anger has been mounting yet again in Barton after months of temporary traffic lights have caused havoc on the A6.

Work to replace a gas main saw lights installed back in January. Although the temporary lights were due to be removed over the Easter weekend and work completed, residents and motorists have faced major delays since the start of the year.

Blog Preston reported at the end of 2025 how temporary traffic lights outside a Wain Homes development saw traffic reduced to one lane at Barton as work was conducted outside the entrance to the housing scheme.

With long queues caused back then, it has been a similar story for drivers once again at the start of 2026, with many taking to local Facebook groups to voice their frustration at the delays.

Barton resident Adrian Royles, who we reported on back in November after contacted the area’s MP Maya Ellis about the problems on the A6, said the start of this year had seen the road clogged up yet again.

Adrian said: “This work shows a complete disregard for the residents of Barton and the travelling public. There have been no improvements to the traffic management at Barton. I have no confidence in the Lancashire County Council (LCC) highways team’s willingness to place conditions on work permits nor, more importantly, their ability to police matters.

“Perhaps [LCC] could look into the effectiveness of its highways department to ensure the best possible outcome for the rate-paying population of the county and the travelling public. The works were lifted to allow free passage for King Charles recently and I do feel the ‘commoners’ should be better considered.”

Blog Preston reported in September how some Barton residents now believe the only way to alleviate the ongoing traffic chaos on the A6 was the construction of a new M6 motorway junction just south of Garstang.
