A cheap evening fare deal on the buses will no longer be available on eight Preston Bus services.

The bus operator, which is part of the Rotala group, has confirmed it is withdrawing from the £1 evening price cap.

Lancashire County Council had been subsidising evening fares meaning after 7pm it was just £1 to catch any bus.

But this will no longer apply from Monday 27 April on commercially-run Preston Bus services.

The 6,8,16,19,19A,23,31 and 33 services will now charge standard fares during the evenings.

A spokesperson for Preston Bus said: “At Preston Bus, we have been proud to support the £1 fare cap scheme and the benefits it has brought to our customers and the wider community working in partnership with Lancashire County Council.

“While we recognise the positive impact the scheme has had, the level of reimbursement provided in 2025 has not carried through into 2026 . As operating costs continue to rise, this has made it increasingly difficult for us to sustainably remain within the scheme.

“We understand this may be disappointing and would like to thank our customers for their continued support. We remain committed to providing safe, reliable, and high-quality bus services across our network.”

The £1 evening bus fare will still be available on what’s known as tendered services – which are run by Preston Bus on contract for the county council.

Services where the £1 evening bus fare cap will continue to be offered are the 43, 44, 45, 48, 114, 311, 312, 319 and 347.

As well as the late evening services on the 6 between Preston Bus Station to James Hall Distribution Centre after 10pm.

The 19 and 19a late evening services between RPH and Larches will also continue to see the £1 cap Monday to Sunday as will the 31a service on Monday to Saturday evenings.

Preston Bus announced before Christmas they were withdrawing the national £3 single bus fare cap because it was no longer viable.

In recent weeks the firm has expanded its 23 route to run into Bamber Bridge connecting up to Royal Preston Hospital and competing with the existing 125 Stagecoach route.
