Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says the number of undocumented Malawian migrants repatriated back to the country has risen to 5 000.

She visited the new temporary location for the foreign nationals in Durban earlier on Sunday, accompanied by Deputy International Relations Minister Thandi Moraka, Malawi High Commissioner Stella Ndau and Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane.

The eThekwini Metro opened a new site near North Beach to release pressure on the Sherwood Community Centre where thousands of displaced migrants have been camped for over two weeks.

“We are closing Sherwood completely; this is what we could call a temporary repatriation centre. As you can see it is nice there is enough space so that people can be processed in terms of their status, those who want to go.”
